Cornus mas is a dogwood that produces edible fruit. The fruit can be somewhat sour, but are still good eating fresh and can be made into excellent jams and jellies. They are vigorous, pest-free, and even produce well in quite shady locations. The wood is so hard that it was used exclusively by the Romans for their spear shafts. It was planted throughout the empire so that there would always be a supply nearby.
