A close relative of the shagbark, the Shellbark prefers richer moister soils than the shagbark. The nuts can be incredibly large. So large that they are the largest native nut in North America. The nut meats are generally not easy to extract, so making pounded hickory nut milk (Powcohiccora) is an excellent way to use the bountiful nuts produced by mature trees.
