These trees are seedings grown from Asian/American hybrid seed. The varieties harvested include Rosseyanka, Nikita's Gift, and Kasandra. All of these are incredible varieties with enormous and superb tasting fruits. It is unknown what the chances are of having male or female seedlings, but the proportion of females should be good because the trees were grown in an orchard context with a low proportion of males, which influences the proportion of male seedings to be low. From my perspective, there is no downside to having a male - if you want a female there you can graft on to it, or it can be a male and provide other nearby trees with hybrid pollen for future landrace breeding. I believe if everyone planting persimmons works on informal landrace breeding with selected varieties in the mix that will be a great crowd-sourced method of discovering and creating new varieties by the hundreds.
